CBSI Spam Control Center

You want to help in our never ending battle against spam? Here's how:
1. Use Webmail instead of your regular mail client (ie Outlook or Outlook Express).
2. Move your spam to your "Spam" folder.
3. Copy your ham (anti-spam lingo for mail that is not spam) to your "Ham" folder.
4. Each night, we have a script run through these two folders and "teach" our spam filter what spam looks like and what ham looks like.

How does this work?
First of all, computers are stupid (nearly as stupid as any other piece of metal and plastic sitting on your desk). Second, spammers are generally pretty smart and well paid for their attempts to sell you things such as Viagra and porn. We use a piece software, a "spam filter", called SpamAssassin (SA for short) to try to limit the amount of spam that we all recieve. SA uses a plethora of tools in attempts to figure out which emails are spam and which ones are not. Each of these tools give a certainity of whether or not an email is spam, which is expressed in a score. By default if the score for an email is 10 or above we mark it as spam, and if it is 15 or above (which is almost certainly spam) we just delete it. However this isn't perfect, because computers are stupid and spammers are constantly trying to find new ways of fooling SA into thinking their spam is not spam. The most powerfull tool SA employs is called a Baysian filter. This Baysian filter's power comes from the fact that it works by "learning" what spam looks like and what spam doesn't look like. So, the more spam and ham it learns the better it gets at identifing spam and ham. Each email that is manually identified and "taught" to SA helps you and everyone else using our email.

Thanks for your help!
